GREAT FUTURES START HERE: EXCEPTIONAL NEW YORK CITY TEEN WINS YOUTH OF THE YEAR HONOR FOR VARIETY BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF QUEENS.
Nayomi Spencer to Now Vie for State Title and Scholarship
New York NY, 3/15/2011- Selected among several local outstanding youth, Nayomi Spencer will compete against other Boys and Girls Club Members for the New York State Youth of the Year title and a $1.000 college scholarship from Tupperware Brands Corporations. As the new Youth of the Year for Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens, eight-teen year old Spencer is a true example of an extraordinary young woman recognized by Boys and Girls Club of America (BCGA) for her sound character and, leadership skills and willingness to give back to her community.
Spencer has been a Club Member at the Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens for 13 years participating in every aspect of the Club. Throughout her tenure, Ms. Spencer has thrived in the Performing Arts Department working her way into the position of Asst. Performing Arts Director. “Nayomi is a bright and talented young woman, to watch her command a room of young performers while teaching and guiding them through her choreographed moves is inspiring. To know that she learned these traits here at the Variety Boys and Girls Club and is now giving back is a testament to the Boys & Girls Club system that empowers young people to be whatever they want to be, and to BE GREAT,” said Terrence Hughes, Executive Director, Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens.
If Spencer wins at the State competition, she will compete for the title of North East Region Youth of the Year and an additional $10,000 scholarship from Tupperware Brands, the recognition program’s national sponsor. Five regional winners will advance to Washington, D.C., in September 2011, to compete for the title of BGCA’s National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year will receive an additional $50,000 from the Rick and Susan Going Foundation and will have the opportunity to meet with the President of the United States in the White House.
